AFGE Local 1916 consists of scientists, engineers, geologists, accountants, and many more professionals. Our Local represents all technical, clerical, and professional non-managerial employees of three large research laboratories: the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, and the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory.

At the DOE-NETL we conduct in-house research and development (R&D) and we fund R&D through the private sector and academia. Our R&D covers every aspect of the environmentally sound use of fossil fuels, from extracting and transporting to final conversion to electricity, chemicals and other end-use products. NIOSH is involved in all aspects of the health and safety of miners and first responders.
