AFGE Statement On Eide Recess Appointment

(Washington, D.C.)—Bobby L. Harnage, Sr., National President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), released the following statement in response to President Bush’s recess appointment of Peter Eide to the General Counsel of the Federal Labor Relations Authority:

“By taking an end run around Congress, Bush is ignoring legitimate concerns lawmakers have expressed about Eide’s ability to impartially enforce the labor statute on behalf of unions. Evidently, the Bush Administration doesn’t believe that the Eide nomination could pass the Senate.

“For the past 12 years, Peter Eide has served as the chief architect for the Chamber of Commerce’s opposition to every pro-worker initiative. It will be incumbent upon Eide to demonstrate his ability to fulfill the opposite responsibility to protect the rights of employees and their unions to organize and collectively bargain.”

The American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, is the largest union for government employees, representing 600,000 federal workers in the United States and overseas, as well as employees of the District of Columbia. To learn more about AFGE, visit www.afge.org.
